When meditating, perhaps the very first realization is the fact that our thoughts come from 'emptiness'. With this in mind, what can we say about how much control/agency we have as human beings?

Have you written anything about this or could you point me towards someone else who addresses this question?

It’s an interesting question! I haven’t written about it. I don’t have anything to recommend, I’m afraid. I don’t recalling anything that cast much light.

Most discussions are at an abstract, metaphysical, absolute level, which never goes anywhere. It sounds like your interest (and mine) is more practical and relative—“how much” agency/control do we have, rather than “in principle, do we have any free will, or not?”

Hm, that's somewhat disappointing. You're right, my interest in this question is mostly practical (your other posts probably played a part in this)

My vague sense is that this is why new experiences (talking to other people, reading books, picking up a new hobby, going to new places) is important. Otherwise you get buffeted by the same old thoughts. I was hoping someone might have explored this in detail.

I am not coming up with anything to recommend… what you say seems right and important. So, I would encourage you to write about it yourself!
