Most of the temperate northern hemisphere was densely dotted with beaver ponds before humans mostly eradicated them. If this study is accurate, letting beavers build dams unmolested might be the fastest, cheapest way to scrub CO₂ from the atmosphere?https://phys.org/news/2019-02-ponds-absorb-carbon-woodland-climate.html …

In addition to creating ponds that sink carbon without further beavering, beavers actively bury tree branches in the bottom mud (long-term storage for winter noms) and also actively plant fast-growing shrubs around their ponds (gardening for summer noms).

Thus have I read. When inhabiting a new site, they fetch branches of appropriate species and plant them in the bank, where some sprout roots and generate new shrubs/trees. Disclaimer: I don’t know how good the evidence is on this. OTOH, it sure looks like that around here!
