Most of the temperate northern hemisphere was densely dotted with beaver ponds before humans mostly eradicated them. Thus have I read. When inhabiting a new site, they fetch branches of appropriate species and plant them in the bank, where some sprout roots and generate new shrubs/trees. Disclaimer: I don’t know how good the evidence is on this. OTOH, it sure looks like that around here!
