There's the possibility that when Rota was writing in a purely theoretical mode he wasn't original but when borrowed from mathematical practice (where definition + example is a common mode of explanation) he was bringing something original into the phenomenological landscape.

Yes, that’s a good point. There’s a pattern&nebulosity thing going on… it’s both true that good work should make contact with reality and true that the contact can mostly only be interpreted in cultural context.
