If universities come to be coded as “feminine,” what social consequences? Often results in loss of status (causality runs both ways). Maybe “women learn to be social harmony experts at uni, while men prepare for real work at subject-matter bootcamps.”https://twitter.com/robamacl/status/1089579773469360134 …

divided by men vs. women in the already existing direction (men=right). But if the right increases its hold on lower class voters, then the parties can't be any more split by gender than the classes are. Yet college graduates are approaching a 40:60 M/F split. Interesting times.

"Universities"? or "Faculties"? or "Disciplines"? My guess is Faculties (with, perhaps, even a few disciplines in a few places switching faculties because they feel so out of touch with the rest of the faculty? Have switches like that happened in the recent past, say 20th C?)

So Q is, does anything really change? Physics is already coded male, and unlikely to change. Likewise Art History. English becomes *more* female? History (or foreign languages) *more* female?

I might worry that fields that are coded male but mostly useless, like physics, just evaporate, if they no longer fit in a coded-feminine uni but also won’t fit in a coded-masculine-job-preparation bootcamp. Some third type of non-uni state-funded research institution needed?

I guess I am too far from day to day university to know if this is a realistic concern. I don't see Physics or Engineering as being considered useless soon (though Theoretical HEP may require a re-appraisal).

Yes. Saying that physics is useless displays a lot of ignorance about the whole area. People focus too much on the stale situation with particle physics while many other fields (e.g. material physics) are having steady progress.

Yes, I apologize; this was an inaccurate generalization.

I think I was perhaps a bit too triggered myself. Sorry. Physics has the burden of what is publicly interesting and what is really happening not well aligned. This at least makes my life a bit isolated sometimes. Few people like to actually have a conversation about my science.

We can probably glean the consequences from the many social niches where universities have always been coded as feminine, college boy.

For most of history universities were religious schools. For a while they got colonized by STEM / objectivity / enlightenment / modernity. Now that is ending and they are reverting to their traditional role as seminaries.
