Compassion for others, and fear of consequences are not unique to Buddhism of course. They seem to have evolved. I’ve worked with brain injured people who have lost their ability to anticipate future consequences, or to empathise or understand other peoples feelings

Yes. No doubt Buddhists will want to claim to have some kind of meaningful ethics otherwise what's the point of being a Buddhist?

I’ve mainly thought of myself as a Buddhist because I’ve found Samatha-Vipassana meditation helpful, and I like the mental qualities described in Theravada. I realise I don’t have to call myself a “Buddhist” to learn these though
