Where were the tourists from? It's not a cultural universal (I don't know if it's even a Christian universal - think Gospel or Pentacostal) that you behave in a quiet slow-moving way in a religious building. I was, eg, surprised when I first visited places like Shwedagon.

I was awestruck when my wife and I visited York Minster, the grandest cathedral in Britain. It is overpoweringly beautiful & vast.
By chance we visited during Sunday services. Fifty 80-year-old women were trying to pray among 500 noisy tourists
