🧵 📚 My mother was a historian. I went to a scholarly used bookseller’s today to see if they wanted to buy her books. “Forget it. I’m awash in books. Nobody wants them anymore. And they buy on the internet if at all.” https://www.hackenbooks.com

🧵 ⛪️ I was awestruck when my wife and I visited York Minster, the grandest cathedral in Britain. It is overpoweringly beautiful & vast. By chance we visited during Sunday services. Fifty 80-year-old women were trying to pray among 500 noisy tourists https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/York_Minster …pic.twitter.com/uXbXIQwQFt

Ah, I walk along the greenway frequently, and I had absolutely no idea there was a bookstore there.

Wonderful place, in a sad way. Definitely worth a visit! Doesn’t look like a bookstore from the outside.

Academic books are too expensive, and usually too specific for a used bookstore anyway. The new between-Library exchange systems are so quick and tight and so FREE now. Yikes.

There's a great used bookstore near me and the key feature of it is that it's really well curated. Has a broad range of tastes but a distinct sense of the owner's particular interests make it reasonably successful. The used bookstore isn't dead!

My guess is that you can still make some money selling used books, like if you have a well curated shop, but that's partly because you can get the books you sell for almost nothing.
