Of course these were people who weren't aware that TeX as a programming language was design to be Turing-minimal or something, with ZERO support for even the most rudimentary abstract constructions! Like programming in Malbolge.
I’m a bit of a typography geek, and want ordinary English text output to look “good,” which LaTeX output doesn’t. Frustrating because obviously the underlying engine can in principle be made to produce “good” output, but the layers on top get in the way.

I’m somewhat more hopeful about bullying ConTeXt into doing what I want, but that’s not easy either.

Ha! I care a lot about the appearance of the math, but not enough about the other text to be unhappy with TeX. CMR fonts are not my cup of tea, but easily replaced these days.

I actually (relevant to how this started) dicked around with mediawiki (or whatever the engine is called) 15+ yrs ago to make its wiki page generated math look better. Three easy fixes to the PHP:
