It has not been my experience that smarter people are socially weirder. Among MIT physicists, for example, there are some socially weird/awkward people, but there are also some very socially adept people. I don't see much correlation at all.https://twitter.com/Meaningness/status/1079405531607883776 …

“Be smart enough. But not too smart that you are weird.” The “prior intuitions” here are more like “a blatantly invariant fact of nature” if you’ve hung around the MIT math department student lounge, for example. https://twitter.com/razibkhan/status/1079367676022018048 … pic.twitter.com/TSoY71Ks0Q

How interesting! Proof (if any were needed) that objective data are needed to validate or refute seeming experience.

I think there’s sampling issues—brilliant weirdos get a lot of attention, but there’s tons of non-brilliant ppl lacking social skills. Plus if both intelligence and social skills contribute to a career in science, then a negative corr might be a selection artifact.>

Has there been a better study on the supposed downsides of high IQ? The last one I remember was among Mensa members, which is probably hell of a selection mess (smart ppl who are well adjusted probably don’t want to join that club...)

well, a good start is the lack of meaningful correlations between intelligence/academic performance and major personality dimensions (except for academic performance and conscientiousness, which is in the direction of being _less_ weird): http://edci6300introresearch.pbworks.com/f/poropat%202009%20metaanalysis%20FFM.pdf …
