water. for truly dried, cracking leather, douse a rag under the tap, wring it out hard and wrap it loosely around the item, seal it in a box or bag and set it somewhere warm. add a damp sponge and air daily for large items. once it bends easily without stiffness, neatsfoot oil.

i have a 1950s gas oven with a pilot light, so i leave it in a box at the back of the range top and check it every other day
