These are fundamentally pedagogical questions rather than Buddhist. To approach it from questions that look at effective teaching & transmission of skills /knowledge from the wider world is the way to go. Apprenticeships governed by clear rules & agreements can be v.powerful

This reminds me of Ken McLeod's 3 functions of a teacher: 1) to teach technique 2) to call people on their stuff &/or 3) to be an embodied demonstration of the teaching. The 3rd function, in particular, varies greatly depending on the learning modality.

The second is tricky without clear agreements, if we're solely referring to adults, but perfectly doable. But teachers need help with this and in Buddhist group seem to rarely get it.

The scarcity of teacher training, and more broadly the lack of institutional support for teachers, is a central part of the problem

And in turn this is largely due to lack of money, due to the dysfunctional but near-universal delusion that Buddhist teaching can and should somehow be provided for free.

Freely offered and provided for free are quite different things. There are plenty of examples of non-capitalist teachers doing well. I'm proud to include myself among them now.

That should read post-capitalist, not non-capitalist. In my mind, post-capitalist forms must also be backward compatible with capitalism, or find a way to interface with it. It's post- in the sense of being done with and moving on from.

I’m totally enthusiastic about post-capitalism in principle… but we don’t have much functional sense of what that could be like?

Western Buddhism has pretended to adopt traditional dana-based financing, but lacks all the cultural and institutional reasons that worked in Asia. So it doesn’t work overall, although there are people and institutions that have been successful for idiosyncratic reasons.

The proof of the model, though, is whether it can replicate. You have been uniquely effective at marketing yourself through the podcast, conferences, social media, etc., for a decade… Most Western Buddhist teachers haven’t done that, and most can’t.

Yes, I agree, though the model I'm working with isn't a marketing model, it's a pricing model. It would need to be connected, in a modular way, with other things. I do think it could replicate.

My intuiton is that it's a perfect fit for open source info sharing and opt-in marketing. That's more-or-less what Buddhist Geeks has always been.

I'm reminded of creating a "micro-patronage" model in 2010, which had no precedents I could find at the time. Several years later and there's Patreon. Eventually platforms will make it easier for people to offer alternatives to fixed cost and subscription based pricing.
