If you can make it work for you, that’s fantastic, and I’m impressed and supportive and jubilant!
The proof of the model, though, is whether it can replicate. You have been uniquely effective at marketing yourself through the podcast, conferences, social media, etc., for a decade… Most Western Buddhist teachers haven’t done that, and most can’t.
Well, IMS and Spirit Rock are doing quite well. Their offerings continue to grow in popularity, they continue expanding their buildings and capacity, and at least in the case of IMS they're prices are low and scholarship funds are high. Something is definitely working there.
In Taiwan, where I currently live, there seems to be a donation culture with Buddhist events. A lot of red envelopes passing hands. However, I can't really get it as a westerner. I would rather just pay some participation fee and know that I have contributed a reasonable amount.
The model I'm working with gives a suggested amount, the average amount, and the range, but still leaves the gift up to the participant. I think it resolves the issue you're bringing up, for most people, without making it a single price for everyone.
