For @Meaningness (and anyone else interested)
It's fashionable for the educated to now sneer at the idea of the "the devil", but I think this is another of those examples where enlightenment rationality has missed the point.

One of the enlightenment ideas is the existence of a unitary self, and that's where it all goes terribly wrong. If you have even the slightest self-awareness, you surely know that you're constantly riddled with cravings, inconsistencies, akrasia; 2/

and if your mental model consists of ONLY the unitary self, then an obvious explanation for this situation is Satan -- nothing else, within that mental model fits the bill. 3/

In other words, you fight the idea that "Satan is real", with all the problematic baggage that entails, not by mocking the obvious lived experience of every human being, but by providing a better mental model, one that is NOT built upon the unitary self. 4/

When you feel yourself drawn into some argument about Satan, drop the theology and explain to all concerned about The Society of Mind and similar concepts. 5/

You fight a bad idea with a better idea, not by shouting loudly that the bad idea is "obviously" wrong, and, BTW, anyway who subscribes to it is both backward and despicable. 6/

Here's a primer for these sorts of ideas. https://www.ribbonfarm.com/2013/10/18/the-government-within/ … It's not perfect (in particular I think the better metaphor is self as Press Secretary rather than Prime Minister), but it's a start. //
