“Mindfulness and compassion” can stunt your moral development by prioritizing feelings over principles and consensus over impartial processes. So I argued in 2015…. 1/2 https://vividness.live/2015/10/16/better-buddhisms-a-developmental-approach/ …pic.twitter.com/VeN9uA4Eza

“Empathy expert” who “sought to demonstrate that meditation can make people more kind and caring” bullied her subordinates so badly that she was forced out as head of a prestigious research institute. My latest personal ethical dilemmas have all been around interacting with people I don't like or respect. Buddhist advice seems to swing between 'cultivate more compassion' and 'accept your experience of dislike/discomfort' depending on how I apply the lenses..

I keep oscillating between these two and 'just pay the price of leaving, stupid!' and getting nowhere. Haven't found clear guidance for people who do have strong compassion, strong values, but probably still a shadow self around somewhere that manifests as other people.

It’s hackneyed, but I’ve found the parable of the empty boat helpful. (Notably while working for an abusive psychopath.)http://psychopathsandlove.com/the-psychopath-an-empty-boat/ …

Other people are all wind-up toys—just arbitrary physical processes that blindly do their stupid thing. It’s pointless having any emotions about that. This is not true or false; it’s a view that is usually morally disastrous—in fact exactly the view of psychopaths themselves!

But it can be a highly useful way of seeing when one is stuck in an obsessive loop of negative feelings about someone. Not just pragmatically, but also morally, because it ends the hurt/blame/rage cycle. You don’t (usually) blame a rock if you stub your toe on it.pic.twitter.com/tixW5dTSbF

Unlike rocks, people are also moral agents and *should* behave better. Recognizing humankind’s dual nature as moral and as blindly programmed allows one to stop being upset that we all—to varying degrees—are inadequately moral.

This doesn’t justify or excuse or explain bad behavior; it just gives one permission to not have to react to it emotionally. It’s not that you *shouldn’t* have negative emotions about bad behavior; rather, this is a way to drop them when they aren’t helpful.

One is also an empty boat oneself… there isn’t anyone home, so to speak: only a shadow that you can mistake for a person at twilight. This doesn’t actually make you invulnerable (as some Buddhist texts claim) but helps you take your own reactions/emotions less personally.

None of this addresses the “should I stay or should I go” question at all. But it can help create space within which the question can be considered more clearly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMaE6toi4mk …
