You've stated that "It's impossible to reach stage 5 [of Kegan's model] without going through stage 4." I think that's an interesting claim, because when I subjectively look at my 20s it sure *seems* as though I crashed directly from stage 2 to, at least (1/2)

a robust theoretical understanding of stage 5, after which I had to spend a decade filling in practical gaps. I suspect it's a poet thing. (2/2)

I've been listening to dharma talks from a prominent U.S. vipassana teacher. I'm struck by how much of the content, apart from the parts strictly relating to meditation, could come straight from countless Protestant sermons.

The flip side of this basically describes 80%+ of the students I work with. Out of touch with feelings, trapped in concepts. Makes sense that going too far in the other direction would stunt moral development!

Relating back to groping lamas, I think this is the key point: compassion meditation makes you feel good, but not necessarily do good when you continue life. Then there is a terrible mismatch between what you thought you ought to be after all that work, and what you still are.
-
That mismatch can’t be revealed because it would bring the whole pack of cards down. So the practitioner’s non-compassionate deeds must be hidden from internal scrutiny or explained away.
