Do I gather that the left has successfully tabooed the concept of virtue signaling while I wasn’t looking? Presumably because it was effective in puncturing pretensions. It’s not a right/left thing, though…

Virtue signaling is universal, and the concept is an indispensable tool for understanding what people do and why. Rightists virtue-signal just as much as leftists. Most opposition to abortion was always obviously virtue-signaling, for example, and not genuine moral concern.

It’s true that both sides virtue signal, but anti-abortion stance IMO is not so much about virtue signaling (though it often may be), but rather about “policing the boundary of disgust.”

“Policing the boundary of disgust” is something one can engage in without actually feeling deep moral concern but rather a somewhat superficial one — that the boundary must be maintained. Thus is my current stance, btw.

“Virtue signaling” is sometimes misunderstood as being linked with vanity and not having a deep moral concern, but it isn’t true. One can be both deeply concerned and engage in virtue signaling.

Yes; it’s an inescapable part of being human! And probably a net-positive activity.pic.twitter.com/OqACUmfddQ
