I think the idea of virtue signalling got tabooed extremely quickly, and not entirely unjustly given how it was being used.

Pretty much in the way that most tools of reasoning and rhetoric are - it's a very easy thing to accuse your ideological opponents of because there's no defence against against the accusation that can't be met with further accusations of signalling
