Do I gather that the left has successfully tabooed the concept of virtue signaling while I wasn’t looking? Presumably because it was effective in puncturing pretensions. It’s not a right/left thing, though…

Subcultures such as religious sects and fringe political ideologies have their own virtue-signaling shibboleths and taboos, whose function is status-climbing within the subculture. I wrote about virtue-signaling dynamics in the 1960s-80s here:https://meaningness.com/political-left-right-rotated …

Here I suggest that practically all talk about ethics and morality is actually virtue signaling—with special reference to religion in general, and Buddhism (my religion) in particular. h/t

It’s true that both sides virtue signal, but anti-abortion stance IMO is not so much about virtue signaling (though it often may be), but rather about “policing the boundary of disgust.”

“Policing the boundary of disgust” is something one can engage in without actually feeling deep moral concern but rather a somewhat superficial one — that the boundary must be maintained. Thus is my current stance, btw.

virtue signaling has always seemed like and extended form of phatic communion to me - I wonder if there are other terms to lean on that encourage deeper examination (since "virtue signaling" the phrase is now associated with the "wrong" virtue signal) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phatic_expression …

First time I have heard the term 'phatic expression'. I have been phrasing it as a necessary ritual. Thanks for expanding my vocabulary!

True, the virtue signal is an essential clue to understand sociality of human nature, but not true that instances are wholly disingenuous in sentiment; more accurate, I think, is they’re not based on moral concerns over which one is prepared to make real personal sacrifices.
