Virtue signaling is universal, and the concept is an indispensable tool for understanding what people do and why. Rightists virtue-signal just as much as leftists. Most opposition to abortion was always obviously virtue-signaling, for example, and not genuine moral concern.

Subcultures such as religious sects and fringe political ideologies have their own virtue-signaling shibboleths and taboos, whose function is status-climbing within the subculture. I wrote about virtue-signaling dynamics in the 1960s-80s here:https://meaningness.com/political-left-right-rotated …

Here I suggest that practically all talk about ethics and morality is actually virtue signaling—with special reference to religion in general, and Buddhism (my religion) in particular. h/t

I think the idea of virtue signalling got tabooed extremely quickly, and not entirely unjustly given how it was being used.

Ah… how was it (mis)used? I’ve been too busy with family-crisis fire-fighting to pay attention to cultural dynamics in the past year…

If it was deployed one-sidedly, viciously, and indiscriminately (as I think it was) then the refusal to take it seriously is to be expected.
-
Yeah. It has the problem of being a useful concept that is too easy to weaponise in a way that causes it to degrade to uselessness

I think more like: the right successfully deployed accusations of virtue signaling*, so the left assumes that anyone talking about virtue signaling is a rightie doing tribal war. * Not hard. Roughly everyone is signaling all the time.
