Abandoned Books Thread for tracking books that I've triaged out of my reading list as not worth it.

"A Burglar's Guide to the City" - seems fine. Probably decent if you're more into the subject than I am. Didn't hold my interest - I felt like I'd got about as much out of the author's essay (http://www.bldgblog.com/2010/01/nakatomi-space/ …) that prompted me to buy the book as I would out of the book.

"I Am Right And You Are Wrong". I'm sure I had a good reason for buying this book. I hope it was cheap (it's second hand). Trying to do a thing with style (possibly writing from a tradition I am unfamiliar with) but it's mostly just highlighting author's attempts to seem clever.

(I should note at this part that if I say mean things about a book you really like, feel free to let me know. My approach to book triage is deliberately designed to minimize the effort spent in filtering out bad books, and this is sometimes unfair to good books)

Wikiworld: "Is this not a succint description of the Baudrillardian produced catastrophe, the continual media massage? Is this not the Zeitgeist of liberal democracies"? Unsure, but it's a good reason to put the book down. I'll ask an expert to translate if I decide I care.

I picked up and parked Bertrand Russel's "In Defence of Idleness" at this point. After I'd read the fourth introduction in the book I decided I wasn't in the mood, but that as I actually like Russel and these bits weren't by him I thought I might change my mood later.

"Sustainable Business: Key Issues" - Kopnina and Blewitt. Been sitting on my shelf for years barely read. After some skimming I decided that the chances of me finishing it were basically zero. Seems fine-but-not-great. Probably useful to someone who isn't me.

"How to Solve It" - Polya. I already knew I didn't like this book but kept it around hoping the heuristics might be better than the main pedagogy. They aren't.

I got little/nothing out of this, too. It’s a classic. I think it’s because it’s nearly the only work on the topic. Why hasn’t anyone written anything better since? (Is there something better I don’t know about?)

I've wondered the same thing. I'm not aware of anything better, but I'm not sure that this book is better than nothing.

I guess there's a bunch of better stuff available over a wide smattering of blogs, but nothing curated and collected. Mathematics pedagogy doesn't seem to have good incentives.
