Huh. After harping on extensively about how you should write in a way that works well spoken, I'm embarrassed to have only just noticed that speaking out loud actually forces a very different style than "speaking out loud" inside your head does.

I don't think these are interchangeable. Text-to-speech is probably also a good technique, but it teaches you something different. A lot of the benefit of reading it out loud yourself is that you learn the rhythm of your writing and where the word stress goes.
