sorry, I don't mean to stir up conflict in my mentions, I just see that this source is much more comprehensive and critical than most of what I'm finding, but on the other hand very one sided. so I want to see what buddhists think about the authors.

They have an axe to grind and their presentation is one-sided as a consequence. OTOH, they do point out a lot of issues that are genuine and important and deliberately evaded by most sources. Their discussions are mostly factually accurate, but lack balancing considerations.

I don’t know Kalachakra from the inside; I’ve read only academic explanations. So I can’t speak from experience about it as a possible path. I can say it doesn’t appeal to me personally, for reasons quite different from those the Trimondis adduce.

I don’t know anyone who has actually practiced it. In fact, I don’t think I’ve even read of any Westerner who has. It’s easy to “get the initiation,” which means sitting through three days of monks reading a text out loud in unison in a language you don’t understand.

As far as I know, that’s about as far as it goes (for Westerners). I might be wrong; I haven’t researched that at all.

I might be able to say more about realistic alternatives, depending on what you are looking for and why.

I am not looking for myself, but my gf likes to explore some form of vajrayana since we've seen a lot of their rituals in nepal and we're both curious to see what it looks like from the inside

Do you mean conceptual understanding, or personal practice? Or an outsider’s experience of the practice in a more genuine and intimate setting?
