My belief is that De Soto is usually not-even-wrong—I think his work has led to the belief that strict, indefinite ownership is the capitalist choice. Joe Studwell's work on the essentiality of land reform to economic success in East Asia is a good counterpoint.

the other post-De Soto work is mostly people going "if we formalize land ownership system in these slums, we'll make economic activity." This turns out to produce the bad effects of destroying communal modes of organization—but in the absence of credit, doesn't create growth.
