I see how this is helpful when reading about fairly applied stuff where the author might have a financial stake (ie, bio textbook where the author has a start up working on a cancer treatment) - but how is this helpful when reading about theoretical math?

I’m not sure it applies there; I don’t know the field.
@JohnDCook’s example was applied math that can’t be applied. More generally though, most academics have reputational skin in a game, more than financial. If the game they are playing is irrelevant then you can ignore them. - 1 more reply
