Yes. It will be interesting to see what happens to the Tibetan religious community en masse as the oldest generation departs. Namkhai Norbu was for me the most interesting - due to his clear presentation of systems as method. Unlike others, his presentations were meta-systematic.

This is what happens when you have to figure stuff out for yourself, instead of parroting what you were told. If you are smart enough to reconstruct the logic, you understand, and can transmit, the principles and functions. Which most lamas are totally clueless about.

I came back from a “Dzogchen retreat” with a lama I didn’t know. Friend asked me about it. “Really nice guy, would be great to go drinking with him. Understands exactly as much about Dzogchen as does my stuffed hedgehog plushie.”

This has been my worry when researching Dzogchen retreats I want to go on. Like, I want a 'try before you buy' model and there aren't always talks available online for every teacher...

Well, I guess it’s important to know what you like. Then you can often pick up whether it’s worth going in person from a teacher’s book/s. For example: if it’s Sutra dressed up as Dzogchen, personally I’m not interested. That might suit others tho.

… and it’s basically always sutra pretending to be Dzogchen. Approximately no one teaches actual Dzogchen. Which is why it’s so tempting to attempt it oneself… a bad idea for so many reasons.

Any examples of red flags for this sort of thing?

Hmm… Many other things get repackaged and sold as Dzogchen. Usually it’s easiest to recognize that the “Dzogchen” is specifically something else (Madhyamaka, Paramitayana, tantric ngöndro, funerary ritual, …). Otherwise, you need to be able to recognize Dzogchen; that’s harder.
