This exhortation to go beyond tribalism joins a lot of other voices reacting to a hyperpartisan time. It's a good effort and I certainly agree, but I also can't thinking something more is needed. 1/5 https://impactful.info/posts/2018/9/16/tribes …

Appealing to our better angels is noble and does have an effect, but it's not necessarily stable and doesn't (as @jaredjanes admits) work on the people it needs to work on the most. 2/5

To get less war, I suspect it's not enough to speak up against it. It needs to become less worth it, less cost-effective. When it comes to disagreement and culture-warring, that can mean equal-opportunity yelling at bad argumentation for being bad argumentation. 3/5

Random idea I came up with and haven’t though though yet: Most public displays of intense feelings have become less socially acceptable than they were. Culture warring has become *more* acceptable. So, many people transform unrelated intense feelings to channel them into that.

I don't know if the premise is true. If anything, I'd suspect the opposite.

Agreed. The cause isn't "my feelings don't have the usual places to go". The absence of clear, shared meaning systems (e.g. decline of religion, postmodernism) I think causes all struggles and feelings to be worked out in the last most clearly shared system, i.e. politics.

Um, OK, suppose we drop the causal story. Is “people transform random strong emotions they don’t know what to do with into culture warring” plausible?

I think so, yes. As long as we take "transform into culture warring" here to mean "model and act out those emotions with the concepts and language of the culture wars". I dunno that the emotions very often or even can truly detach from their actual origins, i.e. fully transform.
