PSA: if you aggressively mute everything and everyone involved in the culture war, this can be your experience of twitter too. (C.A.R. Hoare is a great pioneering computer scientist, inventor of Quicksort and CSP.)https://twitter.com/_awbery_/status/1045944717777743873 …

The great and terrible thing about Twitter: on waking the first thing I want to do is contradict C.A.R. Hoare on the internet.

I'm ambivalent about that, re Popper's paradox of tolerance... on the one hand no amount of empathy and tolerant participation seems capable of defusing the deluge of cheap toxicity, tribalism and outrage, it just moves so fast...

on the other, muting isn't simply opting out of the culture war, on the individual level it's intolerant to a specific individual (and therefore arguably exacerbates the situation), but as a whole it is actually tolerant of that intolerance. a prisoner's dillema =(

Yes; I mostly mute words permanently. People only temporarily while they are having an outrage spasm.

i should try muting words, i think i'm too scared of false positives due to polysemy ;-) my approach has been to try and follow many high SNR people as representatives of various communities I'm interested in, avoiding more prominent figures with a strong presence.

Yes… it’s a tricky balance, and my original tweet was too confidently positive. OTOH, lots of people don’t know they can mute, so maybe it’s useful to alert them to the possibility.

It's also worth bearing in mind that not engaging with a topic on Twitter is not the same as opting out of that topic, it's choosing to not make Twitter a battlefield on which you fight that particular war (a battlefield that has not historically proven to be very useful IMO)

Twitter is fundamentally a bad place to argue, and a mediocre space to have in depth discussions, but a very good place to emote, which means that for difficult subjects the cost of participating in it on here can very rapidly outstrip the benefit.
