I remember @eleekirk observing a couple of years back that academia, at worst, seems to run on ambition, pettiness and fear. It may keep the machine running, she said... but it is dirty fuel, and the emissions are horrendous.

On the other hand, if the right structures were in place, it could equally well run on the basis of collaboration, generosity and a genuine love of discovery. The machine would run better. The emissions would be close to zero.

A blog post about this might further a very necessary conversation (that has barely begun—it’s becoming unavoidably obvious that the academic system is imploding, but not much discussion yet of how to rescue something from the wreckage, or what a replacement might look like).
