In Ancient Greece, they figured out the rules of geometry. In Ancient India, they figured out the rules of grammar. Both thought that they had uncovered the fundamental principle of the universe. I suspect that grammar is the better model.

In other words, in the long run, language will provide a better description of reality on a human scale than maths will. Maths is no doubt useful to an elite. Language is more universal and better at higher level stuff.

Learning Sanskrit is a very revealing exercise in this sense, since one has to explicitly understand grammar to use it. I begin to think that the world would be a better place if more people understood grammar, preferably by learning Sanskrit alongside maths.

Math plus Classics was the essence of elite education not so long ago. I’m glad to have had both. Rare even in my generation.
