Buddhism jumped the shark around 200 AD. But this didn't stop it getting renewed contracts for 1800 years.
I think it only started to get interesting in the 700s. No accounting for taste!

Depends on whether you think they were serious or trolling. I favor the “elaborate joke” interpretation (although as a matter of taste rather than historiography).

To some extent the collapse of the Gupta Empire caused a reset - allowing the emergence of the stuff that interests you (and me to some extent). But at the same time, in mainstream Buddhism, the shark started riding the skies and jumping over Fonzi.
