Although I agreed strongly with much of the article, I don’t think the central thesis—that pure research is inherently self-referential and wasted effort—is correct. Of course many of bureaucrats making funding decisions don't care enough about the problem either. Hard to pay someone to care if you don't yourself either.

I think short of science becoming less prestigious there is little that can be done to get rid of science funding that doesn't look too closely at what exactly it is giving the money to.
