The meaning of a word is not fixed by other words -- but people do love building castles in air.

Quite, really all that is going on is some bit of a neural network is pattern matching. And it's probably linked up to a complex model based on utility. So, e.g. our ability to recognise cottage cheese will depend on whether it might poison us, more than it's colour.
