The program “the social construction of scientific knowledge” rests on lab ethnographies done in the 70s&80s. “Give Me a Laboratory and I Will Raise a Discipline” (2008) showed that social scientists could not point at EVEN ONE SPECIFIC FACT that was constructed as claimed.pic.twitter.com/0XDu1jYNzq

Sormani’s first-ever observation of the discovery/construction of a fact (multiband superconductivity in PbMo₆S₈) was greeted with: 1. That looks like way too much work for us to want to do 2. You haven’t helped show Science Isn’t Real, so who cares? http://www.fupress.net/index.php/smp/article/view/19698/18300 …pic.twitter.com/FvpoaGEfVm

The subtext: “You’ve gone native, which is inexcusable for an anthropologist. You actually seem to BELIEVE in their primitive rituals. You flunk!” But ethnomethodologists are *supposed* to go native. And if you want to learn *what physicists do*, you have to learn some physics.pic.twitter.com/QERqWgjzIr

Replace the abstract, philosophical, political “is scientific knowledge socially constructed?” and “how does scientific induction derive laws from observations?” with “concretely, what do scientists do to get a fact?”— It becomes obvious that there can be no general answer.

John Norton says: if one blob of bismuth melts at 271℃, you can conclude all do: a valid induction from a single instance. This is licensed by specific facts about elemental phase changes, not by any general theory of induction. https://www.pitt.edu/~jdnorton/papers/material_theory/material.html …

Similarly, observing multiband superconductivity in PbMo₆S₈ once lets you generalize to all PbMo₆S₈ everywhere eternally. This depends on specific facts about superconductivity. To understand the social construction of scientific knowledge, we need similarly specific facts.

Sormani’s accomplishment is to document a scientific fact in sufficient detail that the question of *whether* it is socially constructed dissolves. What would that even mean? Instead he opens by example inquiry into *how, practically* scientific facts come into existence.pic.twitter.com/KBNk6A6wJW

Yeah, sorry, there’s a lot of missing context. I’m thinking out loud in part. About different topics at different times… not so much Buddhism recently. Sorry! It will come back around at some point.

Sure, in the meantime I just got done on a great conversation with Ronald Purser that went surprisingly deep & wide. Once it's up, make sure you give it a listen.
