A friend of mine was doing a phd in mathematics education. Her advisor had invented a software system for teaching set theory and was using it with calculus students. Her dissertation topic was to show how well this system helped students learn calculus.

Her work showed that the system was useless at best and actively harmful to slower students. She had to drop out of the program because she would never have been allowed to graduate with those results.

How bizarre (and utterly fascinating) -- just offhand, I'd have thought her thesis was correct. (to qualify this, I'm NOT a professional mathematician or the like: purely amateur; still, though)

The point is, the system was created by her dissertation advisor. She was expected to show it was effective.

a cultural change towards required pre-registration for any and all academic research might help stop this kind of bullshit also pigs might learn to fly someday

Need a cultural change towards adversarial science reporting. Job of science reporter should basically be to assume every person telling them about their discovery is a homeopath-tier fraud: report their claims then read their paper and summarize why they're probably bullshit.

Rapidly determining why a paper is worthless is a key skill for scientists as well, but it’s almost never taught. This should change.
