Definitely, there are many examples. I used "romanticism", "capitalism" and "patriarchy" but almost any complex and contentious concept works like this.

Not quite as analogously, pro- and anti-capitalists have nearly disjoint ideas of what “capitalism” means, and both meanings are useful in practice even if neither has a whole lot to do with the actual economy.
