Many disciplines substitute mindless statistical rituals for thinking. Worse than nothing for scientific knowledge, because false publications overwhelm accurate ones. An excellent overview; ♻️@_Srijit http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/0149206314547522# …pic.twitter.com/iGcx4txh0e

But social norms have to be pretty mindless. So what you are saying is that as a social thing science can't use norms to decide what is good or bad science.

A community can reflect on its own norms, look at how well they are functioning, and reform them accordingly. The psychology replication movement, led by the folks at @blackgoatpod for instance, is an inspiring example—concerning statistical practice, specifically!

A minority can reflect and critique; its much harder to get a majority to reform. But in practice only relatively mindless norms can be enforced.

I’d like to be a bit more optimistic than that, but your point is well taken that the modal scientist wants to reflect as little as possible. That makes it all the more important for *some* in the field to continually evaluate and adjust the norms applied mindlessly by the rest.

Norms are essential, but ideally they should never be applied mindlessly, or taken for granted. When norms are functioning well (periods of “normal science”), they don’t require constant focus. Revolutionary science necessarily loosens them. https://meaningness.com/metablog/upgrade-your-cargo-cult …pic.twitter.com/Gr8Wid5xDT
