Some of you will find deep learning and machine learning directly useful or interesting for what you do now. Others will find a compelling use for it. And knowing a bit about it will demystify it and allow broader participation & discussion about it. Which we really need

Here’s the bumper sticker version of machine learning: You can cluster things into groups to discover common attributes You can classify things into categories with common attributes And you can find ranges of values that fit a hidden pattern (or find that pattern)

Deep learning isn’t much more mysterious— it just uses layers of “neurons” to pretty much do the same stuff. Of course there are ways to apply & use this that can get more complicated. But you can break it down, just like we did here

I semi-retracted that after several people who know more about tensors than I do said that it is a tensor, or close enough. Although other people who also know more about tensors than me say it really isn’t.
