Was witchcraft actually the name of the crime they were convicted of? I thought most were convicted of child abuse (both sexual and not) in connection with witchcraft (or, technically, Satanism), which may not have been illegal as such.

Yes, that is correct. OTOH, the content of the trials was largely about witchcraft/Satanism, despite that not being a crime in the US currently.
