Well, it’s one thing to think you know something, and another to test it rigorously. The latter is hard work and takes time. And you sometimes find out you were wrong.

Yes. But it is still interesting why it took so long to get the verification. Was the intuition delayed in circles which test these rigoriously, or did testing just take decades?

Good question; I don’t know. There are many more plausible hypotheses than there are resources to test, so individual scientists and granting agencies and communities have to prioritize. That’s hard too…
