    People often ask me what they can do to lower their carbon footprints. Here’s what I told : “We can’t meet our carbon goals through individual action alone...we also need to act collectively to demand a rapid shift away from fossil fuels.”

    Need another reason to ? With continued burning of fossil fuels, future Northwest winters are expected to be wetter with more extreme rain events. Gloomier? For sure. But also more floods, landslides, and other threats to people and nature.

    My biggest climate-related hope for 2020 is that journalists, activists, and politicians talk less about our individual carbon footprints and talk more about how businesses and governments consistently refuse to do anything meaningful to reduce theirs

    And always encourage agency and action: “She also said it’s important to give people things they can do and ways to get involved. Action is an antidote to despair.” “People need to know that it’s not too late," she said. "There is still so much we can do.”
