Nothing did more to pave the way for Trumpism than the toxic brew of war adventurism, Islamophobia and the securitization of immigration enforcement all advanced by Bush's war on terror.

In the 1980s Roger Scruton was using his ‘eminence’ as a ‘public intellectual’ and editor of the very right-wing Salisbury Review to argue that protesting racism was part of a plot by anti-racist activists to stir up race hatred, and that they were ‘the real racists’.

Final bit: in neither piece is there a suggestion the older generation may be reaping what it sowed. Perennially high house prices, the triple lock on pensions while austerity wreaks havoc, skyrocketing student debt. It is not hard to see why they might be resented

I'm tired of the platitudes about not speaking ill of the dead. Our task is to live in such a way that reasonable people will be sorry when we're dead, rather than to hope that people's pious clichés will prevent them from pointing out the horrible things we did and said.

I wonder if the people who were playing their "can't we all get along?" tunes earlier will condemn this?

Had the pleasure of meeting Roger Scruton at a mixer in the Országház Budapest once. He was surprisingly down to earth and, very racist

How to infantilize an entire generation: 1) declare all the markers of adulthood to be linked to financial independence (home ownership, big wedding, nuclear family with professional childcare) 2) price them out of those markets/underpay them so those things are unreachable

Look at point 8 (and, to a less obvious extent, points 3 and 7). We're getting a master class in how the primary aim of representative organisations is to ensure their own continued existence by inserting themselves into processes and making themselves structurally indispensible.

The grotesque accusation of antisemitism against Bernie Sanders - an antiracist whose entire extended family were murdered in the holocaust & parents survived it - have collapsed because the American left questioned it & effectively ridiculed those using it to slander a good man.

Today we release our , identifying 10 key points we believe Labour needs to sign up to in order to begin healing its relationship with the Jewish community. We would expect candidates for Labour Leader or Deputy Leader to publicly & unequivocally endorse these in full

When the left leads, it will not be given any chance, ever, at a fair hearing. The establishment will want to ram home the point that the left's lunacy was a real thing. A great way to do that is to be fair to Labour once the "lunatics" have been removed.

My sources say the death penalty, for champagne, being considered for George Eaton. I am pro-life and take no pleasure in reporting this.

I remember thinking very distinctly when I saw Saving Private Ryan that the most simple minded version of war and the necessity of ruthlessness was being rehabilitated in Western culture, and that there would be consequences. This war nostalgia is not a good sign.
