PS The Suez crisis referred to by the British intelligence official was in 1956. (The Soviet invasion of Hungary that same year was also a pretty major defeat for liberal ideas, but Suez was a bigger deal for Brits than Americans as I learned as a student .)

And democracy/liberalism did not end in 1956. Nor did Western liberalism/democracy die in the 1930s, 1949, or 1975. Too soon to be betting against these ideas now. In 2041, I’ll bet democracy will still be alive and maybe even thriving compared to its alternatives.

Thank you all officials for your courageous and tireless work during this evacuation. And I know you are all committed to finishing the evacuation mission using other modalities now. Godspeed.

Hard reentry tonight of urgent emails, writing deadlines, letters of recommendations etc after looking at this sky for a week. But grateful for the (partial) downtime. If I haven’t replied to your email, bump it up. I’m 12,000 + behind right now.

I dont know where she plans to go next, but U.S. has benefited tremendously from immigrants fleeing oppressive regimes, including USSR/Russia. (Google "Google founders"). 10s of thousands of Russians now working in the Silicon Valley who could be adding value to Russia. Spasibo!

For the second time in 3 months, 🇺🇸 diplomats were forced to leave Belarus. Lukashenka continues to isolate Belarus in order to stay in power. The regime refuses to hear people & rejects any dialogue. We're grateful to 🇺🇸 diplomats, for your brave work & solidarity.

"In the global struggle between democracy and dictatorship, and the fight for a peaceful Europe, Ukraine is on the front lines — not unlike West Germany during the Cold War." & that's why the meeting tomorrow is so important. My take:

Today my BBC colleague had to leave Russia. The authorities had labelled her a threat to national security. Outrageous, unfair & an assault on media freedom. Here’s Sarah’s report on her expulsion. Producer Camera/edit

  19. Yes, Ive learned this too, from my sons, who have argued with me over the years on this subject and have won out! Its a habit for me now. But isn't that true of most grammar rules? I never end a sentence with "with" in print, but I do all the time in speech.

  20. My Fitbit just reported that I averaged 80 more minutes of sleep per day while on vacation this week than the week before. Awesome. Take days off if you can. It's restorative. I don't do it enough (last genuine vacation was in 2018, the week after Helsinki!), but I'm learning.
