After years of C and C++ I've come to the conclusion that code should be code and data should be data, unless you're smart enough to treat code as data. Merging structs and functions into classes was a mistake.

The worst that stems from the entire idea of encapsulation was hiding data -- 'I have some abstract data and I can do x, y and z on it'. Now *that* was a mistake, as it pretends the greatest problem of computing -- presenting and moving data -- does not exit.

I respectfully disagree. Without knowing what OOP or C++ was, I put func. pointers in C structs to create my own ersatz classes so that I could refer to a plurality of objects with diff. properties using universal code that treated them all the same. Made my life so much easier.

Often, but not always. My experience using a multi-paradigm language has been that OOP is appropriate for describing some things and is not appropriate for describing others. I use both patterns in the same codebase.
