I agree. I feel quite uncomfortable with the rush to judgement here. The truth will become clear with time. Until then, let's try and be patient and compassionate with all those involved.

We are hiring again. Need a marine vertebrate person... whales, dolphins, turtles all qualify, but would be cool for me to get a fishy colleague!

As a young🐿️, is it best to settle down close to home, or take a shot at somewhere new? Martinig et al. show that the long-term consequences depend on sex. New on this great work on .

Infographic on the effect of dispersal on red squirrel fitness. Males benefit from venturing far from their birth site – finding better opportunities for mates and resources – while females are simply making the best of a bad lot. Females have more offspring if they settle near their birth site.

It is worth noting, however, that I am not aware of any connection between climate and natural selection on breeding date in red deer. So perhaps science will correct again!

So is this Bonnet et al. paper the “first” to show evidence of plastic and evolutionary advancements in breeding? To me it doesn’t really matter. This is an excellent paper that is perhaps the most comprehensive study of these important evolutionary processes in the wild.

Most importantly though, we now know that natural selection on breeding date is NOT caused by spring temperatures, which are warming.

More importantly, Jeff Lane recently revisited our original paper. The advancement in breeding that we documented in the 90’s reversed in the 2000’s. There was no longer any evidence for an evolutionary change in this trait. Science corrects.
