I don't know if it makes sense to call it a communist genocide any more. I don't think China is a communist nation any more. It merely uses that label as a pretext to unleash extreme right wing policy and now, outright fascism.

I agree – what I mean is authoritarian regimes drawing from the language and symbolism of communism. Some would argue that even the USSR ceased to be communist by the mid-1920s

another difference, in my opinion, is absence of empathy. even for those who are horrified - they are horrified while reading about it. and onto the next story. the world we live in is not a good place.

Less about genocide and more about enforced cultural assimilation to Han Chinese norms.

I've got to agree here. Given what the Chinese Communists were capable of doing and did to their own people - bulldozing over the lives of millions for the Great Leap Forward; this is not close to what they did in the past.
