Happy New Year! I wrote this piece in which I asked a bunch of incredible organizers what's bringing them hope for decarceration in 2023. Their words gave me hope for possibilities for dismantling incarceration.

Police training is not and has never been the issue. The cop who murdered Rayshard Brooks received 2,000 hours of training, including sessions on de-escalation tactics, cultural-awareness training, and instruction on use of deadly force. Policing itself is the problem.

As Memphis releases video of the police murder of Tyre Nichols, I'm returning from my sabbatical briefly to post Part 1 of my series about how the media will likely cover it: helping cops use their own failures and violence to get more power and money.

I don't understand how you can, almost 11 years after Trayvon Martin, still be the sort of person calling for more police-reform efforts like body-cameras. These guys did this to Tyre Nichols with all the cameras rolling.

Georgia police killed a #StopCopCity protester two days ago, and arrested 7 more––charging them with domestic terrorism. Their combined bond amount to be released is $117k.
Can you donate to the Atlanta Solidarity Fund to help bail them out?

The person killed by police in the forest has been identified to ACPC as Manuel Teran. Manuel was a beloved member of the community. They were generous, running a mutual aid group. In our conversations with those that loved them, two words consistently came up: kind, and fierce.

Well-planned actions advance your position no matter the outcome. These folks were strong and ready to go, and now they're better friends, they've built community, they've brought families and librarians on board, they've practiced, etc. Really great stuff.
