Kleptocracy, whether homegrown or Russia-linked, compromised the EU's justice system & now attacks the backbone of the European values - the press freedom. No coincidence that 2 out of 4 recently murdered EU journos were looking into Russia-linked corruption

We've been ignoring those trojan horses of corruption for far too long, refusing to check & penalize the Russia-backed kleptocratic elites in EU's eastern states. Bulgaria, for example, has the
#pressfreedom ranking & corruption in some respects worse than in places like UkraineShow this thread -
Here's the investigation on the Russia-linked syphoning of EU funds that murdered Bulgarian journalist featured during her last TV show.https://twitter.com/BivolBg/status/1048977088697569286 …

Joining
#BBCNewsday &@Shaimaakhalil to talk about murder of a Bulgarian TV anchor. This is the 4th killing of a journalist in the EU since 2017 - we can't lose the Union as a last safe haven for reporters from all around the world, including myself https://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/player/bbc_world_service …Show this thread -
Going live at
@Monocle24: we should be careful not to speculate about the case of murdered Bulgarian journalist, but we have an obligation to highlight her work on Russia-linked embezzlement of EU funds & emphasize the perilous state of#PressFreedom in EUhttps://monocle.com/radio/Show this thread

The leader of this is Trump.
-
Well no, it's Putin. Trump is no better and he's helping normalize this kind of behavior in the parts of the world where it used to be unacceptable, but since Putin owns Trump was started killing journalists back when Trump was pretending to fire people on TV, Putin is the leader
-
Oh, correct; I guess the loudest voice is Trump's, but the heaviest hand has been Putin's. And that Trump is normalizing it worldwide is harmful - it was once the position of a despot, now it's the position of a "world leader." Shameful.
-
The way you stated that is perfect—the loudest voice is Trump’s, but the heaviest hand has been Putin’s. Brava. So true.

There is a collective effort here in America to vilify journalists. Even as we clearly see this objective from the highest office in the land, many in the media are playing along. I’m not sure if it’s some form of self preservation or simply a callousness toward their fellow man
-
I hear bits in pieces from various news outlets about security measures taken by various media groups. Of course what happened at the Capital Gazette in Annapolis should have them all-and us-paying attention.
-
Exactly & perhaps they are, but many of them seem to take a position that sides w/the narrative the GOP wants put out there while they ignore the truth. Is it bc they fear if they report the truth, their lives are in danger? I think their lives are endangered regardless..
-
I agree. These threats need to be a feature story of their own. We see journalists tweeting about threats, we see them being threatened on social media, but we don’t see enough stories about it.
-
That’s what they should do. Highlight every threat they get. Every time DT openly calls them the enemy of the people in the hopes one of his crazy loon cult members will take that as permission to act on his call to violence.
