Yesterday was the 29th consecutive day with below normal (warm) national gas-weighted HDDs. We'll add a few more days before that streak finally ends early next week
1
Through yesterday, January is tracking as the 2nd-warmest since 1950 from a national gas-weighted HDD perspective (514 vs. normal 664 and record 511 in 2006). Cold in the West/Central in the final week takes us down a peg but still projected to finish at #3 warmest.

You may recall that at one point last fall the Mississippi River was drying up in areas of the Mid-South, thankfully that is no longer the case (graphs here are at Memphis from mid-October vs. today)

Much has been made of the moisture improvements in California (deservedly so), but check out how much drought/dryness have improved in the Midwest/South over the last few months droughtmonitor.unl.edu

Thus far in climatological winter we've basically had three distinct periods--warm Dec 1-16 (12th-lowest GWHDDs since 1950), very cold Dec 17-27 (6th-highest GWHDDs since 1950), and very warm Dec 28-Jan 17 (lowest GWHDDs since 1950)

We've not had a day with above normal (cold) national gas-weighted HDDs since Dec 27. The ensuing Dec 28-Jan 17 period yields the fewest GWHDDs on record since 1950 for the period (467.6 vs 30-year normal 630.0).

Though there's still plenty of snow season left, and the pattern is turning drier for the rest of January, thus far this year is outpacing the record 1982-83 winter for snow water content in the Sierras, particularly in the south (graph via )

Yesterday marked the end of a stretch of above normal national Gas-Weighted HDDs that lasted from Dec 17-27. The total of 387 GWHDDs in that period ranked 6th-highest for the period since 1950, and the peak of 44.0 GWHDDs on Xmas Eve was the 14th-coldest December day since 1950.

Despite the brief reprieve from precipitation today, the next seven days will be active across the West as several waves of moisture produce widespread 2-6" rainfall totals in coastal portions of the region, with higher terrain expected to receive several feet of snow. 🌧️❄️

Yesterday Philadelphia had a high of 59° (at 3AM) and a low of 9° (right before midnight). That 50° spread between max/min is the largest on record for the city dating back to 1941, edging out 48° (61°/13°) on Jan 9, 1978 (data via mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/plotting/auto)

Wow. I just noticed this but wind stress across the length of the Lake Erie has piled water up towards the east end but look at how much the water level has dropped on its west end. That is unreal. This could be something to watch.

The temperature at Nashville has dropped to -1°F. This is the first time we've been below zero since 2/5/1996. However, the record low for this date is -8°F (1989), so that's safe.

Will be curious what the official low in Denver was this morning--5-minute obs (which are Celsius rounded, so sometimes off by a degree or two) say -24° which would be one of the coldest on record (though a degree shy of today's record)

All-time record low of -42° in Casper WY this morning! (assuming it's not instrumentation error--it has been reporting an erroneous dew point for several hours)

We'll see if it's legit--the dew point sensor is definitely erroneous with its reading of -76° but the temp seems possible even though most nearby coop stations are "only" in the low -30°s
