What she's referring to would be the constellation of extremely wealthy people who have coalesced around criminal justice reform in the years following the Supreme Court ordering California to de-carcerate. Which brings us to a recurring theme in these DA races....
The establishment candidate will refer to the challenger as "reckless" or "dangerous" and as somehow outside of the community. In San Diego last year, where a public defender was also running for DA, the incumbent ran a series of ads painting her as "dangerous" and a "threat."
These ads were deeply anti-semitic, and directly tied the challenger, a woman-of-color, to Soros-tinged conspiracy theories about a jewish conspiracy to bring disorder to American cities.https://twitter.com/summerstephan/status/993686251201941505 …
Of course, that type of dog-whistle won't even come close flying in Queens. But the idea that a candidate running for office, supported by reform-minded big money from out of state, somehow endangering the lives of residents, remains.
An interesting through-line to watch as these types of races continue to pop up across the country.
